A majority of European
countries can boast an exceptionally high literacy rate, higher even than that
enjoyed in the United States. All the same, Roger Massey, Bible League International’s European Division, organized a literacy ministry Master Trainer conference for its
partners in Russia and other nations of the former Soviet Union, where a high
educational level was a long-standing Communist ideal.
What makes the literacy
ministry attractive in Europe and the regions of the former Soviet Union is
that it offers training, through the Scriptures, in English, the official
language of the European Union.
Future BLI Master Trainers from Armenia,
Kazakhstan, Moldova and Russia gathered in Moscow for an intensive course for
training facilitators to use BLI’s English literacy materials.
One conference
participant, Artur, Bible League Armenia’s representative at the seminar,
already had plans in mind for his first steps upon returning to his mother
land. “I plan to have two kinds of groups,” he described in careful,
flowing English. “One group will be formed of Christian and non-Christian youth
and adults and a second group will be made up of devoted Christians already
proficient in English whom I can train as teachers,” he explained. The
ambitious volunteer wants to launch both levels at once. “I believe I can
prepare a team so that the project has big results in Armenia,” he added. “We
need a team of Christian teachers and trainers.”
