SOUTHEAST ASIA: Reaching Cambodian Buddhists with the Gospel
In Cambodia, 96% of
the population practices Buddhism. The religion has a nearly 2000 year
history in Cambodia and has become deeply integrated into popular
culture. One of the most impressive historical sites is the Buddhist
temple, Angkor Wat, in northern Cambodia. As such, much of the
population clings to the practice of traditional Buddhistrites. There is a great need for God’s Word in Cambodia and the proper training to help reach the hearts of the people there.
Kit grew up as a devout Buddhist in northern Cambodia. As the eldest son, Kit was not only responsible for his younger siblings, but he was also his father’s heir, meant to carry on family tradition, wealth and religion. When all three of his sisters died before the age of 10, Kit left home, feeling he was not worthy of his family or his father’s love.
While away, Kit continued to devoutly practice Buddhism, praying to his family’s idols and enacting ritualistic meals. During his journey, Kit encountered a man telling stories about a person named Jesus Christ. The man, a Bible League trained Bible Planter, spoke of Jesus as the real God who sacrificed himself to save each person. Kit questioned the Bible Planter in order to learn more about Jesus. Seeing Kit’s need for both the Word and shelter, the man opened up his home to Kit and taught him the Good News.
One year later, the 16 year old Kit is a trained Bible Planter who strives to bring the joy of the Gospel to his home town of Siem Reap. God has provided for Kit.
“I thank God for changing my life. I have decided to follow Him to the end!” says Kit.
Kit knows the Father’s love and is working to spread that knowledge to others. He leads Bible studies and witnesses to Buddhists in his community at every turn.
