Laos Needs Bibles & Bible Resources

Laos is one of the poorest countries in the world and one of the few remaining communist states. Landlocked between five countries in Southeast Asia, Laos is often forgotten, isolated and overlooked.

The history of Laos is fraught with violence and turmoil. During the Vietnam war, an average of one planeload of bombs was dropped every eight minutes for nine years.

For many people Laos is off the radar but it’s not off God’s radar. Laos is one of Bible League’s most outstanding ministry countries. People are desperate for meaning, for healing and for hope. They are crying out to know more about God.

Christianity and persecution
More than 90 percent of the Lao people adhere to Buddhism or their own ethnic religions. Christians represent 3.3 percent of the population but these numbers are growing rapidly. Christian believers suffered immensely under communist persecution between 1975 and 1978. Today, Christians are still watched and targeted. New Christians often face great pressure from family and friends to continue practicing traditional beliefs. Yet, persecution has caused many to grow closer to God as they rely on Him.

Bible League’s work
Bible League partners with local village churches that use our Church Planting and Project Philip programs. Great opportunities have opened up for Bible League to expand its ministry to previously unreached people, especially among remote village churches and tribal people.

Bible League’s ministry work in Laos has exceeded all expectations. For example, more than 7,266 Project Philip workers were trained in 2010– which is more than 600 percent above the goal for the year. Furthermore, almost 5, 900 people became new church members! Truly the Holy Spirit is moving in the hearts of people in Laos.

Need for Bibles and training
There is a huge demand for Bibles, Bible study materials and training as the Christian church continues to grow rapidly. Most Lao people cannot afford a Bible or don’t have access to one. Many trained leaders left Laos in 1975 so the majority of churches do not have a trained pastor. Christians are also desperate for training in evangelism and discipleship so they may be better equipped to share the Gospel, begin Bible studies and plant new churches.

We need your help
Australia has committed in faith to fully fund Bible League’s growing ministry in Laos over 2011, a commitment of $130,000. The potential for further ministry growth and development throughout this country is enormous with more Bibles and Bible resources urgently needed.
